Mini-Lessons 18, 19: Showing Thanks & Aluminum Foil Sculptures

How To Draw A Thanksgiving Turkey /  Fun Thanksgiving Coloring Activity For Kids

SHOWING THANKS

Lesson by Brennan Prusak

       LESSON PLAN

Objective: Educate students on the importance of reflecting on what they have and how to show thanks for these concepts

Age Group: 2nd grade

Materials: White Paper, Crayons, and the students’ hands

Activity: Students will place one hand on the sheet of paper and trace the outline of their hand. After tracing their hand, they will be instructed to label the outline of their index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and pinky finger with something that they are thankful for in their life. After the students label each finger, they will be free to give the turkey a face on the thumb and decorate the rest of the sheet and turkey as much as they would like to add to the festive drawing.

Assessment: I will assess the students by collecting their drawings and checking that they labeled each finger with something that they are thankful for and decorated the rest of the turkey and the background of the paper, if they choose to do so. I would like to take the collection of drawings and hang them up in the class for the month of November so the students can admire their work, and then return the art to the students on the last class before they leave for Thanksgiving. Since this activity focuses on a more personal subject in thankfulness, I feel like it is fair to assess students on completion rather than the content of their work, as there is no “right answer” when it comes to showing thanks.
