Lessons 7 & 8

 Gossip and Its Effects

TELEPHONE GAME: RUMOR

Lesson by Molly Halbach

             LESSON PLAN

Theme: Gossip and Communication

Objective: To teach active listening skills, gossip, empathy, writing skills, and communication skills

Age Group: 5th grade students

Materials: Index cards, pencils/pens

Activity:

First, I will explain how to play the game, Telephone. Then, I’ll have each student write a ten-word sentence on an index card.

I will fold these cards and place it into a bag to mix around. Students will stand in a circle, and then I will have a student randomly select one card.

The sentence on this card will be the first phrase to spread around the circle of students.

At the end of the circle, the final student will say the phrase they heard out loud.

We will compare this phrase to the one on the flash card.

Assessment:

Did students write ten words on their card? Did they actively participate in the exercise? Participation will be measured through attention and engagement paid to the game.

EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS

A real education: the plight of teachers

A real education: the plight of teachers

We found the video to be very upsetting. It was very sad to see passionate people lose interest in the field because it can no longer support their lifestyle and doesn't feel worth it. Teachers everywhere are struggling to keep a positive attitude as the payout no longer feels like it reflects how hard they work. Teacher is such a rewarding profession and it's tragic to see people give up on their dreams and on something that used to give them such joy.

The Power of a Teacher
This video had a much more powerful message. It showed how much of a difference education and having a good educator can make in a child's life. In addition, it demonstrated that a good teacher can ignite a spark in a student to change their lifestyle for the better. It made us happy to see that some educators are still happy with their career path and are truly doing it to make a difference in the world. This video taught us the importance of a good educator. In contrast with the first video, it is sad to see so many passionate people leaving the field because it doesn't seem worth it anymore.

Video Response (a real education the plight of teachers)

After watching this video, it is evident that there is a lack of importance placed on paying and supporting teachers. Nothing said by the teachers was false. They’re putting in their time to help educate the future generations of this country, yet they can’t make ends meet without another job. The hours go far beyond the typical hours of a school day the months of a school year, yet the pay comes nowhere near reflecting this level of work and dedication.

The second video was a fantastic video showing the power that a teacher can have on a student, and how that impact can butterfly to other individuals that are never even in their classroom. By believing in a student, even when he didn’t believe in himself, they were able to help him find his path after he had lost it, and in turn he helped another girl that was in his same spot.

  1. I really enjoyed Molly's lesson plan because it was a fun and creative way to learn a huge lesson. It was a great connection how the game telephone could connect to how information can get muddled when gossiping happens. It was incredibly creative and it will stick with me for a very long time. I will make sure to use this activity with my children one day!

  2. I really liked Kayla's lesson! I used to do ballet when I was little and haven't done it in a very long time. It made me feel very nostalgic. I also think ballet is an awesome way to get kids to move in the classroom. Teaching kids about posture, poise, and patience through ballet are important life lessons that are very applicable in and outside of the classroom! - Samantha Tano
