Mini-Lessons 9, 10, 11: Clouds, Verbs & Merengue/Bachata Dance


CLOUDS

            LESSON PLAN


Age Group: 3rd-4th Grade Science Courses.

Objective: To teach young children about clouds with visual and auditory aids. 

Materials: Photos of clouds ideally presented via power-point, a window or trip outdoors for children to look at clouds right outside their door! 

Activity: Show a series of photos of clouds with the answer on the following slide so they can guess and see if they're correct after. The answers will also be associated with a sound effect to provide another way of memorizing which cloud is which type.

Assessment: How well the students guess each cloud type and identifying clouds outdoors, and participation throughout the activity!

VERBS

Verbs Schoolhouse Rock

                     LESSON PLAN

Objective:
The students will learn the basic definition of what a verb is. In addition, the students will also learn many examples of what a verb is and how to distinguish them from other parts of speech. With the charades activity, the students will also learn how to communicate with their fellow classmates and work together in order to achieve a common goal (answer the charades correctly).

Age Group:
Learning the bases of verbs in early elementary school, 2nd grade.

Materials:
For this activity, the teacher will first need a computer and or a projector screen in order to play the introduction to verbs video. Then the teacher will need the following for the charades game:
-          Pieces of paper folded with the names of different verbs being studied, the ones used today include:
o   to eat, to sleep, to dance, to jump, to run, to sing, to wash, to build, to study, to fly, to sit
-          A bag or bowl to put the folded papers in, in order to allow the students to randomly choose the verb to act out




Activity:
1.      The students will watch an introductory video about verbs -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrfZCvTe-Ko (from schoolhouse rock)
2.      The teacher will separate the class into 5 even groups and hand each group a bag filled with pre-made papers with verbs.
3.      The students will have about 10 minutes to play charades with the people in their group. Each person will go once picking a verb out of the bag and acting it out.
4.      At the end of the activity, an assessment will be given.

Assessment:
First off, the teacher will be watching to see who is participating during the activity and who is not. The students must be engaged and paying attention during the video and activity. Points will be deducted for horse playing. As well, the students will write down what a verb is, and three example verbs that their group acted out during the activity. The students will get an A if they correctly write the definition of a verb and three examples of a verb. The students will get a B if they correctly answer three out of the four requirements. The students will get a C if they correctly answer two out of the four requirements. A D will be given if the students only answer one out of the four requirements correctly, and an F for no correct answers.

MERENGUE & BACHATA

                ·        Age group: 5th Grade

·        Objective: To perform dance of other cultures with an appreciation for authenticity and cultural tradition. (This is an objective from the Miami-Dade County Public Schools pdf – Component III, Objective 5)

·        Activity: The students will be given a brief lesson about the history of merengue and bachata.  After this, they will learn some of the basic steps of merengue and bachata. Once they get the steps down, they will practice partner work. In groups of 4-6 they will speak about which dance they liked most and why.

·        Assessment: In groups, they will say to the class what they learned culturally about one of the dances, and they will show some steps they learned.
