First Lesson Plan: Learning the Ropes
Students Romeo Finley, Robert Burns, and DeeJay Dallas with their piece Rivals
Lesson: Weather and Seasons
Teaching Team: Molly Halback, Valerie Izquierdo, Kayla Pournazarian
Objective: To teach first graders the meaning of weather
and seasons. By the end of this lesson, they will understand the visual transformation in nature/temperature as seasons change.
Materials: Recycled materials outside the classroom from
courtyard- specifically leaves, flower, dirt, sticks, scrap paper. Encourage students to use imagination when selecting items.
Activity:
As a class, we will go into the courtyard of
school and collect three items each.  Before we go outside, we will
explain an example for each season so they get the idea. Bring back to
the classroom, and divide into “buckets” of spring, fall, summer,
winter. If there is an item that can fit into two buckets,
students can explain their thoughts and allow for discussion.
Assessment:
Lay materials out and have them associate
the item with a season. The answer doesn’t have to be “right” as long as
they explain the logic correctly behind their categorization.
 Lesson: Friendly Trash
Teaching Team: Natalie Kiboneka, Melissa Marion, Olivia Steinberg, and Rachel Westhoff.
- Objective

 - A plastic straw
 - A backpack
 - Activity
 - Kids will be told to go outside and pick up items from the environment that could be used as a real environmentally friendly product (ex: leaf straw, etc)
 - They will then come back into the classroom and be asked to assemble their environmentally friendly product using the materials
 - They will then share with the class what they collected and what their product is
 - Assessment
 - Following the activity, they make more environmentally friendly decisions when it comes to plastics
 - Age Group
 - 3rd graders

-------------------------------------

If teaching in a classroom without resources, this would be an awesome way to keep students engaged while teaching them how to use materials in creative ways. I liked the group that used a trashcan to demonstrate recycling. Since most classrooms have a garbage bin, this would be a cool way to demonstrate the lesson to my students as an example in the future.

It is so important to teach children that creativity is their best resource. It is also important for teachers to know that empowering children to use their creativity opens the door to unlimited resources like found objects, readymades, garbage, etc.
